One of the most well-known and successful directors in history, Steven Spielberg has been a part of some of the biggest and most-loved films ever created. It would be quite a task to watch them all again and put his movies in order from our least-favorite to the best-of-all-time… but then again, what else have we got to do? On with the numbering!

#32: 1941 (1979)

1941 blu-ray cover

Score:

In last place we have the infamous comedy 1941, which was Spielberg’s follow-up to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. We loosely call this movie a comedy, because the comedy doesn’t work1941 is an awkward movie that never lands on its feet, and it oddly spoofs Jaws in its opening scenes. The film is loosely based on actual events, and it’s interesting for its plot, its cast and its director… put the terrible pacing and forgettable end result land this misfire at the bottom of Spielberg’s filmography.

#31: Always (1989)

Always blu-ray cover

Score:

6.5

Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss reunited!

This time it’s a likeable romantic comedy that goes down easy… it’s just that this is Spielberg, so this film somehow feels like a bit of a let-down because it’s just an average movie.

How dare he make something that is not an instant classic that we will cherish for all time!

On the other hand I feel kind of guilty about Always being so low on the list, because it is a movie that I enjoyed as a kid and still do to this day.

#30: The Terminal (2004)

The Terminal movie

Score:

7

It’s an interesting premise: Tom Hanks gets stuck in an airport.

I mean, I’ve been stuck in an airport for a weekend and it’s no joke. But this movie has jokes, and it’s an OK way to spend a couple of hours. However, after that you sort of forget about it and never need to watch this film again.

#29: The Adventures of Tin Tin (2011)

The Adventures of Tin Tin

Score:

7

The Adventures of TinTin is a pretty cool animated film that I will pretty much never feel the need to watch again. Something about the characters just doesn’t appeal to me, but the visuals and action sequences are fairly engaging.

#28: The BFG (2016)

The BFG movie poster

Score:

7

The BFG (or ‘Big Friendly Giant’) is a decent and enjoyable family film, mostly interesting for the giant itself, which is played by the fantastic Mark Rylance.

However, something about this film inspires apathy towards it. It doesn’t quite have that Spielberg magic that so many of his other films seem to capture.

#27: The Sugarland Express (1974)

The Sugarland Express

Score:

6.5

A year before Jaws scared everyone out of the water, Steven Spielberg directed this thriller which has Goldie Hawn causing a bunch of trouble and running from the law.

It’s technically his first feature film and it’s a pretty good thriller with a few laughs. Definitely a must-watch for any Spielberg fan.
