5. Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
Score:
7.5
Two Godzilla films in the same year? 1964 must have been the best year of all time!
There’s a lot going on in this movie. Strange meteors, a heat wave in January, a princess who is possessed by an alien and becomes a prophetess from Venus, Mothra and the singing ladies from infant Island, as well as a giant dragon with three heads known as King Ghidorah!
Not even Godzilla can defeat this alien menace alone, and only after he teams up with Rodan and Mothra can they send that wicked dragon on its way.
The fifth film in the Godzilla franchise is a big improvement over part four. The effects are better, the story is more thrilling and the monster fights are tremendous… and hilarious!
6. Invasion of the Astro Monster (1965)
Score:
7.5
Godzilla, Rodan and Ghidorrah show up again in film number six of the Godzilla Saga, but the monsters are an after-thought this time around. It’s all about the aliens from Planet X and their diabolical plans for Earth!
Even so, you’ll have a lot of fun watching this movie. The campy ‘bad-movie’ vibe is charming, plus it has the most hilarious moment in any of the films so far when Godzilla has his ‘happy moment’ on Planet X.
If Invasion of the Astro Monster had more monster fighting in it, then this could have really been something special… however, I still liked this one quite a lot.
7. Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966)
Score:
6.5
When life gets you down and you’ve lost hope for a brighter tomorrow there is only one thing you can do: watch a Godzilla movie! You’ll be smiling in no time.
The tone of this one is fun. I love the dancing contest at the beginning – is that a thing? Some dude steals a yacht to find his brother who is missing at sea. A giant lobster monster maroons them on an island where some bad guys have enslaved the our Infant Island friends.
They pray and sing to the big insect but Mothra won’t wake up to save them. Lazy bones. Godzilla is also out like a light, chilling in a cave but finally awakened by a lightening wake-up call. Hilarious monster hijinks ensue.
The only bad thing about this entry is that their needs to be more monsters and less humans running around in the island jungle. Mothra wakes up in the last 5 minutes and saves the day, and on we go to the next one!
8. Son of Godzilla (1967)
Score:
4
Godzilla becomes a proud pappa after a giant praying mantis digs an egg out of the ground. Who put that egg there? Was there a female Godzilla that laid it long ago? This movie doesn’t know and doesn’t care!
A weird (yet somehow cute) baby Godzilla pops out of the egg and tries to learn how to fight monsters and growl like Godzilla. There’s also some humans running around experimenting with weather control, but we all know that they are irrelevant.
This one drags a bit despite some funny ‘Father and Son’ Godzilla moments, and doesn’t have the same energy as the past couple of films.
